When was the last time you did a bedroom refresh? Often one of the last places we think about refreshing in our home is the bedroom, even though we spend a good portion of our lives there. It’s easy to push off by rationalizing that we “only sleep there” but the fact is, good quality sleep is one of the best things we can do for our body. And I don’t know about you, but for me to get quality rest heavily relies on my environment. What it looks like and how it feels.
Why not make that look and feeling be a luxury boutique hotel? These hotel rooms are not like your average Marriott or Hyatt. A lot of these boutique hotels are designed for both style and comfort; to make you feel at home but also immersed in the culture and feel of your destination. Below are some luxury boutique hotel room examples of what I’m referring to.
P.s. Since I am a certified travel advisor with Fora Travel, I can book you any of these hotels (and often with perks like resort credit, room upgrade, free breakfast and early check in/late check out). You can book with me HERE or email me at victoria.daly@fora.travel.
Torel Palace Porto (Porto, Portugal)
Torel Palace Lisbon (Lisbon, Portugal)
Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts (Waimea, Hawaii)
The Dewberry Charleston (Charleston, South Carolina)
Stanly Ranch, Auberge Resorts (Napa California)
Meadowood Napa Valley (St. Helena, California)
Blackberry Farm (Walland, Tennessee)- my personal favorite!
Now that you’ve had loads of inspiration, here are some tips on what how to make your next bedroom refresh feel like a luxury hotel room, but with some non-toxic touches (naturally).

Non-Toxic and Comfortable Mattress and Pillows
What you sleep on matters. Conventional mattresses contain synthetic fill and fibers plus flame retardants which are known endocrine disruptors. Likewise, traditional pillows are usually filled with synthetic fibers, even if the outer shell is cotton. Not only that, but non-organic cotton is also one of the most heavily pesticide sprayed crops. Choose organic, natural fibers and fill to allow you to sleep peacefully knowing you aren’t snoozing in a toxic soup.
Also, to get that 5 star feel, choose a mattress with a pillow top and pillows that are varying degrees of firmness.
Avocado Green Mattresses are some of the best, green-luxury mattresses and even have a 1-year trial and 25-year warranty on them. The Luxury Organic Mattress is best of the best but there are more affordable options that are just as nice, like the Eco-Organic mattress.
Not in the market for a whole new mattress? Invest in a mattress topper instead. And be sure to protect it with a cover pad.
We also use Avocado for pillows as well and have both the molded latex and kapok fill. Our next purchase is going to be the Luxury Organic Plush. But they also have a down filled option as well.
Non-Toxic Luxurious Bedding
There’s nothing better than taking a nice warm shower or bath after a long day of travel and slipping into silky soft bedding. Best thing about sheets at home is you don’t have to worry about harsh chemicals and perfumes they may use at hotels. You can also invest in higher quality bedding, like organic cotton or bamboo fabrics.
Some of my favorite bedding lines are Boll and Branch, Quince and Brooklinen. Some of these sheet sets can get pricey but you can always go ala cart and get a fitted sheet (who uses a flat sheet anymore??) and a set of pillowcases. The links below are all for Boll and Branch.
Don’t forget the top layer…a down or down alternative duvet insert. I prefer alternative down in light weight or medium weight.
Deep Clean
No bedroom refresh can start before a good deep cleaning: dust, touch up knicks, replace broken items, scrub the walls, mopped the floors and/or get the rugs cleaned. Be sure to use non-toxic cleaning products (unlike most hotels). I have used Branch Basics and Force of Nature for years and they are my go-to brands.
Also consider incorporating an air purifier into your room. We have an Air Doctor and not only does it do a great job cleaning the air, it also acts as a white noise machine. Win-win!
Open Spaces
Have you ever walked into a cluttered hotel room? Chances are the answer is a resounding, “NO”. Our personal bedrooms shouldn’t be any different. While we don’t want them to be void of all personality, they should be a calm and welcoming space. Piles of bags, clothes and shoes on the floor, plus clutter all over the nightstands and dressers are not something that screams, “Come relax and unwind!”
Make sure you give yourself enough room to navigate through your bedroom comfortably without having to step (or trip) over items or squeeze in between furniture. And don’t feel the need to put a picture or decor on every wall. The eye needs “white space” to rest.
Layered Look
So how do you make your bedroom refresh look comfortable after getting rid of all that clutter? Layer in fabrics, colors, texture and lighting (more on lighting in the next paragraph).
Pick about 3-4 colors to complement each other and work with them in different patterns and pieces. Make sure there is a variety of textures: plush pillows, headboards, blankets and area rugs; hard surfaces like wooden nightstands, a marble tray and exposed wooden floors or beams; rippled glass shades on ceiling lighting; natural textures like linen and cotton on lampshades and drapes.
Multiple Light Sources
Ever notice how hotel rooms offer a variety of lighting options? Overhead lighting, bedside lamps or sconces, corner standing lamp…and natural lighting. Adding these layers into your bedroom refresh can give it that luxury hotel feeling as well.
Choose sophisticated lighting options that filter light in different ways. If you have a ceiling light fixture (not recessed lighting), I light a dimmable fixture with a textured glass shade/cover or beaded chandelier.
For bedside lamps, something that doesn’t take up a lot of space on the nightstand. On the dresser, another lamp…maybe more of a statement lamp.
If you have a sitting area, a floor lamp or pair of smaller reading lamps works
Color Update
Most luxury hotels are neutral in color. Soft whites, natural wood tones, and punchy accent colors in the smallest of doses. Since bedrooms are a place to find your ultimate rest, choose a relaxing color scheme that allows you to change up the accent colors according to the seasons (if you need some additional bedroom refreshes!)
Don’t Forget Sleewear!
Top off your bedroom refresh with an update on your sleepwear as well! I love Lunya for luxurious (and washable!) silk pjs or organic cotton. Looking for something with more personality? Sant and Abel, Printfresh and Bedhead have really cute, fun and luxurious print pj sets, too.
