Home Decor Trends With Timeless Appeal

Favorite 2019 home decor trends that have timeless staying power

When looking at yearly home decor trends + whether or not to incorporate them into your home there are two main things to consider:

  1. Do I love it + will I continue to love it for years?
  2. How will this fit into what I currently have + love?

I am not a big trend follower but I do love fresh takes on classics + often times that is what we see when new trend forecasts come out. Instead of copy cat decorating, take cues from decorators + designers to see what really speaks to you.

However, if you are looking to incorporate a few new home decor trends from this year I have put together a round up of my favorites that I believe will have staying power throughout the years, especially if you stick to a neutral color palette.

FLORALS

Florals are not a trend I use a lot of in neither fashion nor home decor. However, it’s almost impossible to say that florals have ever really gone out of style, rather the look of them has become a bit more modern. To find floral accents that have some longevity look for pillows that are only one or two colors + have a variety of detail other than just florals like these pillows from Target. Or use some wallpaper to dress up the inside of a cabinet, a small powder room or even an entryway closet.

BIOPHILIA

You can’t go wrong with connecting your home to nature. We spend so much time indoors that there is a draw to make our homes more of an extension of nature instead of drawing a hard line between indoors + outdoors.

This is easily done through more natural wood furnishings, plant life, crystals + natural textiles like linen + cotton. But also through earthenware in dishes, cookware + decorative accents that aren’t completely rustic. When using rustic pieces like raw-edge wood tables, try placing structured + modern decor on them to balance out the look.

BOLD, SATURATED COLORS + WARM NEUTRALS

This may seem like two ends of the spectrum but what they both lend is a sense of warmth. This is an obvious backlash from all the light + airy looks with sharp edged furniture that have been covering Pinterest + Instagram feeds. I love a light + airy feel but it doesn’t need to be accomplished through cool tones + stark whites. Using warmer whites + transitional grays gives both a sense of openness + warmth. Likewise, darker bold colors like greens, blues, browns + blacks should be used sparingly as grounding colors against all the neutrals.

Here are a few good examples. We will see less living rooms like this one on the left with cooler tones + sharp edges. And will see more spaces like the picture in the middle with warmer whites, natural wood + softer edges in furniture + plants. My personal favorite is a neutral base with bold punctuations like in this stunning living room on the right by Summer Thornton.

SUSTAINABLE HANDMADE ARTISAN PIECES

With people wanting more of their own personality shining through in the home they are turning towards artisans + small shops to find unique pieces. There is also the movement towards purchasing more sustainable products like jute, wool, grasscloth + linen.

Both of these are a move in the right direction in my opinion + a great way to support local artisans + the earth. Just be sure to look for pieces that are sustainably harvested + created in humane working environments.

MIXING MODERN + VINTAGE/ANTIQUES

This has been my personal approach for awhile now + the style associated with it is dubbed The New Traditional. To a lot of us it’s important to have modern amenities + not have our homes look totally dated but going full on modern can often times create a cold look. By blending modern + vintage or antique pieces you create a juxtaposition that brings a ton of interest + personality to your space.

The best part? You will be hard pressed to have your style copied, making your home truly unique + reflective of your personality. My favorite way to to this is to find meaningful family heirlooms to display throughout the home.

PASSAMENTERIE

Tassels, cording + decorative trim is coming back in a more modern way + I’m feeling it. A decorative trim adds another dimension to otherwise “flat pieces” + again lends to that trending maximalist look without over-doing it visually.

My favorite more discrete place to use this type of trim is on curtains. The above picture shows a great example of how this look can elevate + tie together a room.

ART DECO PIECES

The art deco period may be my favorite for furnishing + accents {other than some early American pieces. Weird mix, I know}. Also consider crystal glass knobs, a sleek table or mirror with subtle geometric design. Looking for even smaller ways to add this glam style into your home? Voluspa has some awesome candles that have a very art deco look to them.

CURVED FURNITURE

While I’m not a huge fan of overly curvy furniture, I do believe that more traditional lines give a sense of warmth + comfort. We are seeing more comfortable pieces being used in the home in place of the overly stiff mid-century modern furniture.

I do love a good mid-century piece here + there but my heart is with an English roll arm sofa. With a more structured back, it is a great blend of both curved + streamlined looks.

HYGGE CONTINUES

Our homes are our safe places + ultimately where we should feel most comfortable. Creating a hygge home is no longer a trend but a way to escape our overstimulated + busy lives. Making your home a place to cozy up is a must do!

  1. Love this post! Definitely starting to corporate some color, especially blue, with pieces I already had. And mixed some art deco in along with some recently added antiques I inherited. Fun to mix it up after Christmas:) Thanks for all the great tips and beautiful post! I’m inspired! Blessings, Suzanne
